BMW is getting ready to bring its first three-row electric SUV to market, and the first glimpses of the vehicle have now emerged. Disguised prototypes of the iX7 were recently spotted testing at the Nürburgring in Germany, offering an early look at the full-size luxury model.
The iX7 is the electric version of BMW's biggest and most luxurious SUV. The company has not yet announced it officially. It will be the next BMW SUV to adopt the Neue Klasse technology and design, following the iX3 and the iX5.
Like the iX5, the three-row model is set to keep a more traditional look than the fully redesigned Neue Klasse vehicles such as the iX3. A photo posted on Reddit, credited to SHProshots, shows the prototype still under camouflage. Even so, its grille appears noticeably wider and chunkier than the slim, upright take on the Kidney Grille seen on the iX3.
The prototype also appears to use split headlights, in the manner of the current X7, rather than the wider headlight units found on Neue Klasse models. Another change is at the doors: the conventional pull-style handles have given way to small handles positioned on the pillar.
BMW is expected to share more details closer to the launch, which is anticipated in mid-2027. The iX7 is expected to use a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain, as the smaller iX5 60 xDrive does. In the iX5, that setup produces a combined 578 hp (425 kW) and 593 lb-ft of torque, which BMW says allows a 0-to-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds.
The iX5 is powered by a 144 kWh battery and, according to BMW, will offer up to 435 miles of range. It also relies on an 800V electrical system to support fast charging.
This week, at a media event in Southern California, BMW, IONNA and Alpitronic demonstrated the iX5 60 xDrive reaching a peak charging rate of 464 kW. BMW said that, with peak charging of up to 460 kW, the vehicle can add as much as 170 miles of range in 10 minutes.
The iX7 is expected to enter production at BMW's Spartanburg plant in the United States in late 2027, where it will join the new iX5.
