Google has decided not to begin charging for Satellite SOS on its Pixel 9 series phones, even though the free period it originally promised has run out. The company has confirmed that the emergency feature will stay free for one more year.

Satellite SOS debuted with the Pixel 9 lineup and has since been included on every Pixel phone released after it. The feature gives a handset limited satellite connectivity during emergencies, which can serve as a lifeline in dangerous situations far from cell coverage.

When the feature launched, Google said it would be free for "the first 2 years after activation." A footnote on a company support page still carries that wording. It says the service is included at no additional charge for the first 2 years after devices are activated, that it is available in select countries and languages, and that connection and response times vary based on location, site conditions and other factors.

For Pixel 9 series devices, that two-year clock ran out in August 2026. Google gave no sign that it planned to start billing for the service, but it was unclear what would happen next. The company has now settled the question, at least for the near term.

Google confirmed the extension to PCMag. "Confirming that we've extended this offering, at no additional cost, for one additional year," the company said. "We have no details to share beyond that at this time."

That leaves open what might come after the extra year. There have been no hints, even behind the scenes, that Google is building a way to charge for Satellite SOS on Pixel phones.

Apple, which brought satellite emergency features to phones before Google did, has taken a similar step. It recently confirmed that it is extending the free trial of satellite connections for the iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and iPhone 16. As with Google, there is no word on what Apple might eventually charge for the capability.

For now, Pixel 9 owners can keep relying on the feature without a fee, though neither Google nor Apple has said what pricing, if any, will follow once the added year ends.
